FrogWatch: Citizen Scientists on the Frontline of Amphibian Conservation
CANBERRA — Every October, as the days warm and the rains replenish wetlands, a dedicated group of citizen scientists in the Australian Capital Territory (A.C.T.) and its surrounding region embarks on a mission to save the frogs. Led by morphologist and behavioral ecologist Anke Maria Hoefer, the FrogWatch program has been empowering ordinary people to become frontline conservationists for over two decades.
Anke Maria, who began her scientific journey in Australia by cycling around the country and studying garden skinks, now directs her energy towards a program that trains volunteers to identify and record frog species by their unique calls. The annual “Frogtober” census sees more than 200 volunteers monitoring over 220 sites, with the data they collect providing crucial insights into the health of local frog populations. “It’s a great way of getting off the couch at night…and to explore your local area with a totally different setting,” Anke Maria explains

The work of these volunteers is vital, particularly in the face of significant threats to frog populations. Urbanization and habitat destruction are major concerns, as is the silting up of old farm dams, which are crucial water sources that are now drying out more quickly. However, one of the most insidious threats is the Chytrid fungus, a global fungal infection that has devastated frog species.
Despite the challenges, there is hope. Anke Maria points to the story of the Whistling Tree Frog, which was once highly affected by the fungus but now appears to be making a comeback, having adapted to deal with the threat. Even more encouraging is the ambitious project to reintroduce the Green and Golden Bell Frog to the A.C.T., a species not heard in the region since the 1980s.
This reintroduction program, a collaboration with researchers from institutions like the University of Canberra and Macquarie University, is tackling the Chytrid fungus head-on with innovative solutions. One of the most fascinating is the “frog sauna,” invented by researcher Anthony Waddle. These are black-painted bricks placed under a cover that absorb and hold heat, creating a warm microclimate. Frogs seeking refuge in these saunas can effectively fight off the fungal infection, as the fungus cannot tolerate warmth.
Furthermore, scientists have discovered that the fungus struggles in water with high salinity or metal content, conditions that some frog species can tolerate. This offers another strategic advantage for the frogs, allowing them to lower the fungal load and increase their chances of survival.
The FrogWatch volunteers are set to play a key role in maintaining these “frog saunas” and “salt spas,” contributing to a project that offers a powerful sense of purpose. For many, the program is a way to combat feelings of being overwhelmed by environmental issues. “It connects you to your local environment and it connects you to a community,” Anke Maria says. It’s a testament to the idea that by working “one frog at a time, one sauna at a time,” small actions can lead to meaningful change.
